Chess in Rome

Chess in Rome, from the circolo to the weekend festival

Roman chess is club chess. The circoli sit in ordinary neighbourhoods, near Tiburtina station, in Conca d’Oro, the Quartiere Africano and Balduina, out towards the coast in Vitinia, Casal Palocco and Ostia, and in the towns around the city, from Frascati and Marino to Tivoli, Ladispoli and Anzio. Their calendar is dense: one long game a week on a fixed evening, a rapid on many weekends, festivals in hotels, castles and palace halls.

Chess960 in the Rome area

No over-the-board Chess960 event was found in or around Rome, under that name or as Fischer Random or Freestyle chess. The federation’s calendar for the province, the regional calendar of Lazio, the international list of rated tournaments and the programmes of the Roman clubs that publish one were all read for it, and none names such an event in the current or the previous season.

The Italian federation has published rules for a first national Chess960 championship with provincial and regional stages, but no stage in Rome or Lazio has been named so far; the only events of this kind in the national lists are in other regions. Until one appears here, the variant, in which the pieces on the back rank start in a shuffled order, can be tried online at ch960.com.

Nothing to list yet: no Chess960 game or tournament across a real board has been found in the Rome area.

Where these entries come from

A place or a tournament is listed here when it has a name and a public page that can be opened: the national federation’s register and calendar, the Lazio regional committee, the international rating list, a club’s own site, a school circular, a city page. Every fact on a card points to the page that states it and to the day that page was read.

Cards are ordered by how fresh their evidence is, not by merit, and a fact that no page states is shown as “not stated by sources”. What the status lines mean, and what this guide does not look at, is set out under how it is compiled.

Does your circolo meet on another evening?

Timetables change in September, clubs move rooms, new series start. If a card here is out of date, or a place is missing altogether, a short message with a link to the page that shows it is enough.
